Bariatric surgery procedures

There are multiple types and designs for bariatric surgery. As everyone knows, the presence of multiple options means there is NO perfect option.

Types of bariatric procedures:

1- Restrictive (restricting the amount of food the stomach can hold)

2- Malabsorptive (causing malabsorption of nutrients)

3- Restrictive with malabsorptive component (a combination of both gastric restriction and malabsorption).

Bariatric procedures also often cause hormonal changes.

The most common bariatric surgery procedures are:

1- Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGBP)

2- Sleeve gastrectomy

3- Adjustable gastric banding

4- Gastric balloon (ORBERA®)

Weight loss surgeries performed by experienced surgeons today are carried out using minimally invasive techniques (Laparoscopic or Robotic surgery).
